The Ministry of Justice reports that over 100,000 civil claims have been issued through its online court service in the last 18 months.

Good news for volume issuers of claims, but what happens after the issue of the claim? We are finding that where cases are disputed, part of the initial purported defence is to attack the brevity of the information provided in the online claim. More education is needed for users and defendants to explain that short form information about the claim is permitted by the online service. It drives up the importance of a good letter before action as a belt and braces containing some supporting documents. Food for thought as usage surely grows.
